What is Eye LASIK Surgery?

Eye LASIK surgery, or refractive surgery, involves using a laser to correct vision. The vision correction laser can be used to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, or to treat age-related diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and presbyopia.

Although many retinal procedures are performed with lasers, when people talk about laser eye surgery, you may refer more to refractive surgeries such as LASIK, PRK and LASEK. This surgery involves using a laser to shape the cornea.

LASIK

Laser eye surgery is more popular and common procedure known as LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis: ie in Situ Keratomileusis Laser-assisted). LASIK can be used to treat problems for near (myopia), for distance (farsightedness) and astigmatism. During the procedure, a corneal flap is created and a laser is used to cut and separate the underlying tissue.

There are some considerations to be taken into account before undergoing eye LASIK surgery:

* The eye LASIK surgery cost varies depending on the degree of refractive error and the area of the country have to be.

* As with any surgery there are risks associated with LASIK. These should be discussed in detail with a LASIK doctor before deciding to undergo surgery.
